This Henry Bosse photograph from 1885 or 1886 shows Shop I nearly completed. It also shows something the arsenal was proud of: new trees. Several commanders ensured not only that the island was reforested but also that a wide variety of species were planted. At left is one of the derricks used to lift blocks. Pictured in 1911 are the back, or courtyard, sides of the north row of shops. In 1911, these shops would have been phasing down from a decade of making rifles. During World War I, each of the two end shops were connected by walkways so well-built that it is hard to tell they were added up to 45 years after initial construction.
